On May 15th 1970 Ken Helser said "no" to music and "yes" to Jesus. He was inducted into the seminary of life where the Bible was his textbook, the Holy Spirit his professor, and life the laboratory of testing. He and his wife, Linda, began ministry later that same year at a place called "God's Farm", 191 acres of land in rural North Carolina where they ministered to troubled kids. Here was the beginning of the dream that has become "A Place for the Heart". This dream became a reality in 1985 when Ken and Linda where able to purchase 52 of those 191 acres, those 52 acres are now A Place for the Heart.
Since then, Ken and Linda, their son Jonathan and his wife Melissa have pioneered a place where the Father heart of God can come alive in a new generation. Twelve years ago, Jonathan and Melissa, along with some friends, started something they called Creative Worship Camps. Every summer a bunch of high school students would descend on the land for two weeks to be forever changed by encountering God's heart through worship, creativity, and community. After 10 years of Worship Camps, they began to long for more time with God's kids. The 18 Inch Journey, a 60 day school for college age students, was born.
Over the years the ministry of A Place for the Heart has expanded from Retreats and summer camps to Schools, internships, music, and family. As the ministry has grown, so too has the community from which it flows. A Place for the Heart now has a core group of staff and interns who not only live together, but who really do LIFE together. Each summer this family leads The 18 Inch Journey where a new generation is discovering who they really are. A Place for the Heart is a family of people pursuing the Lord and pursuing each other in life, love, and friendship.
